A Home-Brewed Cleaner for Mold Removal at Your Home
The most common place mold is found at your home, is in cracks in between bathroom floor and wall tiles. Contrary to popular belief, soap does not kill mold. That's because like most aquatic life forms, mold will actually grow faster in a soapy environment. On the other hand, bleach will kill mold to a certain degree, but bleach is a potentially harmful material to humans and pets as well. Typically, bleach will not reach deeply into a moldy area and this is why it seems the mold always rapidly returns as there is mold left deep in the cracks. If any mold remains alive, it will likely re-emerge and re-establish a new colony.
Home-brewed, non-toxic, mold removal formulas have been around for a while. One of the more competent ones is one which involves mixing hydrogen peroxide with boric acid. This has shown to be an effective mold removal formula, and it is not toxic to pets or humans.
The technique is simple. It is about spraying the mold colony with the mold-killing concoction, and allow it to penetrate all the way through. However, before we spray the colony with the mold remover, we must wet the colony before we start scrubbing it. Dry colonies, if disturbed, can emit millions of spores into the air, contaminating other areas, and potentially setting up for new colonies in other areas.
You start by spraying the colony you wish to clean with the mold removal mixture you've concocted. Make sure not to scrub too harshly as you may stir some spores into the air, from the deep layers where your mixture has not reached. On thick colonies, you need to scrub them in layers, and re-spray as needed. The objective here is to keep the colony wet and not to cause the spores to be air-bourn by your action.
After having removed the mold using your mold removal mixture, you must also sanitize the area where it used to live. The reason behind this is the fact that tiny little spores, which are not visible to the naked eye, may be clinging on the grout where the colony used to be. You can use a powerful cleaner to clean the area in question. A typical household cleaner would do at this point. However, the discoloration which may be present at the grout area should not be mistaken with the remainder of a colony. It could be just a stain which can be removed by using some bleach.
Before working with the mold removal mixture, you must wear protective gear, such as industrial-strength rubber gloves, a commercial nose & mouth breathing mask, and some sort of eye protection. While it is possible that you apply the mixture using a damp piece of cloth, it is better to use a sprayer to make sure that your cloth didn't miss any spot. Tiny mixture particles from the sprayer stand a better chance at hitting hard-to-reach area, especially in the tiling grouts.
While this mold removal mixture is highly effective, there are types of household molds which may be highly resistant to the home-brewed mixture. One of these types is the black mold. Black mold will probably need to be removed by professional mixtures developed at labs, especially formulated to kill black mold. Another word of caution here is, just because you removed the mold following the exact steps in this article, this doesn't mean that mold won't return. The powerful mixture you've used will eventually evaporate from the tiles, and/or will be washed away when cleaning the bathroom, or simply taking a shower. So mold removal is really a maintenance measure which needs to be repeated every now and then.
